Surgical Treatment

Surgical Excision (From Top)

Rationale of this Treatment

When pain persists and is not helped by injection of cortisone, surgery may be appropriate. The operation aims to relive pain by removing the area of enlarged and damaged nerve.

Effective of this Treatment

The success rate of neuroma surgery varies according to the information source you read. The explanations for these differences can be many though the way in which success is measured is important. In general it would be realistic to estimate that about 80% of people who have neuroma excision surgery do well The remainder are a mix of people who do not achieve a good a result as they would have liked to a small percentage who may be worse off after the surgery.

Advantages of this Treatment

When conservative treatments fail and symptoms persist then surgery is really the only other option. Surgery provides a good result in the majority of(but not all) patients.

Disadvantages of this Treatment

If the operation fails then a repeat surgery may become necessary. In rare circumstances further surgery may not be able to relieve the pain.

Guidelines to Recovery

Day 1
Operation and patients may go home the same day

Day 3-6
Dressing check with nurses to ensure everything is healing properly.

Day 12
By now the skin is healed. Usually there are no stitches to come out as either special skin glue or absorbable stitches are used. At this point patients may begin to make a gradual return to normal activity.

Week 2-4
The foot will still be sore but each day you should feel less pain / discomfort. As every day passes the foot should feel stronger and more normal indicating good healing following your surgery.
