BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT

Sports injury clinic

WHY IS ALIGNMENT SO IMPORTANT?

The simple fact is that there is a real connection between physical injuries and poor alignment of body.  As the feet are the interface between the ground and body poor foot posture is strongly associated with leg, knee, hip and back pain.

Good foot posture encourages:

  • Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly

  • Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis

  • Decreases the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together

  • Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions

  • Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy

  • Prevents strain or overuse problems

  • Prevents backache and muscular pain

Biomechanics is all about understanding how the body is working within its environment and ensuring that bones, joints, muscles are working efficiently and in harmony.  Think about the damage that occurs to your car tyres when the wheels are a fraction out of alignment.  With biomechanics we are aiming to treat the cause of the problem rather than simply masking the symptoms.

WHAT SPECIALIST EQUIPMENT IS USED?

Mr Metcalfe's clinics employs the very latest in pressure scanning techniques coupled with over twenty five years experience in clinical assessment & diagnosis.   The RS scan system uses a highly sophisticated pressure plate which incorporates thousands of tiny cells each measuring the pressure under your feet as you walk.

This information coupled with the information from your clinical assessment is used to better understand how your feet are working and to find ways to reduce your foot pain.

ASSESSING YOUR FEET IN DETAIL

Whether you see Mr Metcalfe or one of his highly trained associates you can be confident that we will undertake a thorough clinical history and assessment.  This will several key elements:

PREVENTION IS BEST

Many clinics simply offer pain killers or anti-inflammatory injections.  These can help but in our experience it is better to fix any underlying causes of foot pain.  By doing this we offer better long-term solutions with less risks from tablets and injections.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BESPOKE AND OFF-THE-SHELF ORTHOSES?

Off the shelf or over-the-counter  "OTC" devices are simply mass made arch supports which come in standard shoe sizes.  Bespoke orthoses are custom made to your foot only.  Custom devices are made from the information obtained from the force plate, clinical assessment and cast of your foot.  The benefits of custom orthoses include:

  • Made to fit your feet exactly

  • More durable / longer lasting

  • Less bulky

  • Better choice of materials available

  • Made to your prescription needs
