ABOUT WARTS AND VERRUCAE

Warts are lesions that affect the skin. They are caused by a virus. The virus is called the “Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)”.  Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is really a family of viruses with  over sixty different family members. Different types of the HPV virus tend to cause different types of problems

• HPV 1,2,4           

  • Commonly affect feet

  • Genital warts

IS A WART THE SAME AS A VERRUCA?

Essentially yes, a verruca is just a wart on the foot.  It is still caused by the HPV like the warts on the hands.

 

WHY DO THEY LOOK DIFFERENT ON FEET TO THOSE ON THE HANDS?

The warts you see on the feet look very different to those seen elsewhere.  This is simply because as we walk we compress the lesion into a hard patch of dense skin whereas on the hands for example the lesions can grow outwards unimpeded.

 

DO WARTS BECOME CANCERS?

Some wart can become cancerous.  Specifically, genital warts have been linked to cervical and penile cancers.  The good news is that malignant changes of verrucae is extremely rare.

• Peak incidence of warts is 12-16 years of age

• Rarely seen in early very childhood

• The prevalence declines sharply around 20

• The prevalence in schoolchildren as high as 70%

 

HOW  DOES THE VIRUS GET INTO THE SKIN?

The virus enters the skin from the external environment.  Inoculation occurs when skin compromised.  This is more likely when the skin is damaged or very wet.
